Susan Beaubien
The Professional
Susan has been practicing in the area of intellectual property law for
nearly 20 years. Her practice focuses on obtaining and enforcing
protection in all types of intellectual property, and includes
counseling clients and providing opinions concerning validity
and infringement issues pertaining to patents, trade-marks and
industrial designs; trade-mark opposition and expungement proceedings;
as well as the drafting and prosecution of patent, trade-mark and
industrial design applications.
Susan has considerable experience in the litigation of intellectual
property disputes, especially in the areas of trade-marks law and
pharmaceutical patent litigation. She has been lead counsel on many
reported decisions before the Federal Court and Federal Court of
Appeal, many of which stand as significant precedents. She also appears
before the Trade-marks Opposition Board and the Patent Appeal Board.
She is also pursuing an interest in alterative dispute resolution as
a means for assisting her clients in obtaining practical, cost-efficient
results.
Susan is Vice-Chair of the Intellectual Property National Section of
the Canadian Bar Association (CBA); Chair of the CBA IP Court Practice
Committee, a Fellow of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada
and is a member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association,
American Bar Association, International Bar Association, and Fédération
internationale des Conseils en propriété industrielle (FICPI). She
also served as a member of the Patent Agents Examination Board,
which sets and administers professional licensing examinations for
patent agents in Canada.

The Person
An avid golfer since she was a teenager, Susan is always seeking out new
and interesting golf courses. Also a spa aficionado, Susan enjoys
traveling to places where she can indulge her enjoyment for both
golf and spas, particularly in California, British Columbia, Alberta,
Arizona, Nova Scotia and Bermuda, all of which hold special memories
for her. Her other interests include reading mystery novels and books
about a wide range of current events. She is an aspiring amateur
magician and also enjoys figure skating (as a spectator).
Susan is a member of the Rideau Club and the Rivermead Golf Club.
